ISOLATION IN A DOOR-FRAME
UPDATE
18 May 2020
It has been a month since I started going around visiting old friends and making new ones. .
The experience has been therapeutic and meditative in many ways, I’d like to think, for all involved on either side of the camera: it was good to break down the monotony of some days. It stretched my abilities and pushed to shoot in constrained circumstance - very dependent on shade, often confined by space, walking in on teendom and toddlerdom and coupledom in the midst of dealing with daily grinds and challenges of changing lifestyle.
As we are slowly coming out of this isolation this will be the last week I will be doing this. I will add “the portraiture in the door-frame” to my regular roster as an option for those who will continue to self-isolate. My regular sessions will resume as I can easily maintain the proper distance and will restrict restrict to outside sessions which. I will continue to donate to the local food-bank 20% of the revenue.
The project
While biking with my kids and taking quick snaps with my phone of the families we visited I thought I’d start bringing my camera on these hour outings to record these curious times, the families, the pets and the door frames. It only made sense - the door frame photographs in London were some of my favorite to take during the lifestyle sessions. They are such an integral part of London life and like the eyes are windows to the soul the front garden is a window to the family. There are bikes, and flower beds, original brickwork , house numbers, glass panels all unique in the uniformity of the row houses.
How it works
- I would bike within the one hour of allowed for exercise a day
- I would use an appropriate lens which would allow me to shoot from the middle of the street and keep you and me both safe.
- Each 'shoot' will take about 15 minutes of your time.
- We can do - 1 group shot, 1 kid shot, 1 'themed' shot if you'd like, pets are welcome
- you get digital, edited photos, in full resolution - no charge
- i get your permission to use this for professional use on my site, social media, etc; a reason to get out of the house; and a bit of adult time.
- Tell me a few convenient times for you. If possible during the day when it’s a shady time on your side of the street.
- If possible, keep your car in front of your house on the day of. This will give me better view of the house
- I will tell you which time convenient for me and txt you about 30 minutes before that i'm coming so that you can prepare and get everyone in 'lets stand in the doorway' mode.

FAQ
Do you touch up?
No. This is the time to document those gray beards and chipped paint on the window sills . Both are beautiful (just go with it)
I’m very worried about that house number.
I remove the metadata and there should be more than a few houses with that same number in the 5 mile radius.
How far do you travel?
The idea is to document people and families in my area and to do some exercising while at it. Given my awesome bike speed of 10 mph I would say I could go as far as Wimbledon and Chalk Farm on a good day. I could be very optimistic about that assessment.
I am not a family. I don’t have a cute hamster or a dog.
These are not a requirement. If you are worried about this you could look into getting them. If you are not, just be hampsterless.
I am in a flat.
That’s great! I’m not only about row houses. Windows work as a frame just as well. Lets talk about floor number and which way windows are facing. I could be up for a challenge.
It says it’s free, but I feel awkward.
Thus the donate button (see below). I understand that it may feel awkward so please contribute any amount you can spare. Foodbank was a vital source of daily meals for Hammersmith and Fulham families before the lock-down. We can only assume that this situation will put many more families in dire need for meals. You can either donate through my site or by going directly to them.
100% of all donation is going to the Hammersmith and Fulham foodbank or you can make your donation directly using their website.

Life goes on in confinement we say goodbye to beloved family members
These two are on their bikes doing their 2.6 challenge for a Age UK.
